Theophylakt (ca. 1055 bis 1107) wirkte zuerst in Konstantinopel, dann in der Region des Ohridsees. Berühmt wurde er durch seine Kommentare, die die anerkannten Auslegungen der byzantinischen Tradition zusammenfassten. Die Auslegung zum Hebräerbrief, die hier zum ersten Mal ins Deutsche übersetzt wird, widmet sich dem Verständnis Christi und schließt mit Mahnungen für das tägliche Leben. In der Auslegung kommt ein gewichtiger weltkritischer Ton zur Geltung. Die Abgrenzungen gegen Positionen, die sich in der Mehrheit der orthodoxen Tradition nicht durchsetzten, und gegen das Judentum sind allerdings nicht unbedacht ins heute zu übertragen.
